Edelrid - Ohm
The Edelrid Ohm is a clever device that clips onto the first bolt and adds extra friction to the system when a heavier climber is belayed by a significantly lighter belayer.
With an integrated Maillon and straight gate Clipping 'biner, the Ohm is simple to use.

This helps a lot when I am climbing with my wife who weighs much less than I do. My only real complaint is that it is extremely heavy.
Bought this due to the weight difference between my wife and myself. Got a good price from dicks climbing. The device is really well made, and cuts the weight difference down loads. I have 4 stone on my wife, and she no longer need to use a sandbag at the gym any more. Their is still a slight initial pull, then the device kicks in. The only problem that we noticed, is it pulls slightly if you pull the rope through to clip in to fast. We use a 9.8 rope and thicker and I would imagine it could be a real problem. Regards Dave
There is a good 80 pound difference between my boyfriend and me. As a light belayer, I love this device. It feels heavy, but sturdy. On my end, it doesn't create rope drag, or slow down feeding the rope. I never feel like I shortrope. We have only used it for indoor sport climbing, but bought it with the intent of using it outdoors. When my boyfriend falls, the friction it creates is very comfortable for me. I also don't get jerked up to the first bolt. The Ohm replaces the first quick draw. To retrieve it, my boyfriend either climbs back up to the first bolt (easily done in a gym setting), or I lower him to the first bolt and he removes it on the way down. This only works for vertical or slight over hangs. When we climb a very overhanging "cave-like" wall, he just has to climb back up to get it. I have not read any reviews on operator errors, or device malfunctions, but I would definitely recommend this device.
The Ohm is designed to ease the problem of weight difference. I did not expect it to live up to the hype, but after testing some falls with very large weight differences it does exactly what it should and better than I had hoped for. Outside of a fall, it doesn't get in the way either. Highly recommended!
My bf and I have such a large weight difference that I was not comfortable even attempting lead belaying for him. We have practiced with the Ohm a couple of times now, and I feel completely comfortable. Even with a large fall, I have not been slammed into the wall or bolt. Great investment!
I had the chance to try one of these belaying my partner on lead. He is almost twice my weight and falls usually end up with me flying... He took a fall, I stayed firmly in the deck. Will be saving the pennies and getting one!
