Alpine - Up needs some getting used to and it would be easy to feed the rope the wrong way through it with possible disastrous consequences. However if you get it right by using it regularly then for belaying a leader on double or single rope in either static or dynamic belays is much safer than say an ATC type device. For abseiling in automatics lock off mode it is superb with no messing about with a prusik needed. For safeguarding your second (s) then it takes a bit of mastering. The device clipped directly to your harness is far from ideal as it preferably needs to be above your waist for best effect. On a fall or lower off you can get in a mess with releasing the rope so plenty of practice needed here. Use it properly and it must be one of the most versatile and safe bits of kit around but not a beginners item!
Good piece of engineering that will give piece of mind to every belay situation. Takes some getting use to feeding the rope in depending on mode you want, so not for the novice. The extra weight is well worth it and gives the security of a Grigri for sport climbs and abseiling on double rope without having to use a prusik. Easy to feed rope through to leader and take in rope for seconds. In taking in mode you can control two ropes separately and they individually lock if loaded.
Using it as a trainer of the young and inexperienced I would say it is easy to understand and use. It inspires a high level confidence. Using it as an experienced climber it is the best belay device I have used. Without a doubt it is versatile, though remembering the configurations takes some getting used to. The instructions are overly complicated and this is its only let down. You can't consult a You Tube clip when you are 500 feet up in a climb. I also don't like the plastic handle on it, this is also a little disappointing as other devices feel more robust. Would be a 5 star if it wasn't for that. Other than that I love it! It does what it says on the tin and does it very well.
This is one of the most versatile belay plates on the market. It does everything think you want from auto-locking on twin ropes down to 7.7, to standard belaying with a 10.5. You can use it in guide mode and unlock it easily when locked. This is a great device for the climbing instructor working and keen climbers who wants a belay plate that can do everything. The only draw back is the weight but then again it does do everything.......
